Bill White Should Apologize for Racially Motivated Attack

Statement by Texans for Rick Perry Campaign Manager Rob Johnson

“Yesterday, according to the Dallas Morning News, Bill White said to an audience of African-American business and community leaders in Dallas, ‘We need a governor who’s a servant, as opposed to Rick Perry, who wants to be treated as master.’

“Today I am calling on Bill White to immediately apologize to the people of Texas for his insensitive remarks that are nothing more than an attempt to divide our state. Yesterday, Bill White showed just how low he will go in his race for governor, by making racially motivated remarks attacking Gov. Perry. Instead of talking about issues that will move this state forward, Bill White has chosen a path based on scare tactics and division. He should spend less time trying to divide our state and more time copying his tax returns that he has failed to release, explaining his role in steering business to a company he had financial ties with as mayor of Houston, hiding his profits from a company he formed to exploit his Washington contacts, and making millions from a company under investigation by Congress for lying to the EPA.”

Green groups call on EPA, Congress to investigate 'fracking' activities

This morning 25 environmental and community groups called on the EPA and a congressional committee to investigate whether two companies violated the Safe Drinking Water Act by using diesel as a fluid in their natural gas “fracking” activities.

Gubernatorial candidate Bill White has collected more than $2.6 million serving on the board of one of the companies, Houston-based BJ Services, and has defended the controversial technique of hydraulic fracturing as “essential to an affordable supply of natural gas.” The Perry campaign, naturally, has pounced on the issue to discredit White's environmental bona fides.

Concern that fracking operations are contaminating groundwater have soared, including here in Texas where the technique has opened up huge plays in the Barnett Shale and the Eagle Ford Shale.

In February, the House Energy and Commerce Committee released information showing that BJ Services and Halliburton had injected diesel underground in at least 15 states between 2005 and 2007. BJ Services admitted to the committee that it had pumped 1,700 gallons of diesel into drinking water supplies s in Arkansas and Oklahoma in violation of a non-binding agreement with EPA.

It’s not clear if this is the full extent of BJ Services’ use of diesel. The EPA agreement pertains only to coal-bed methane production, a small percentage of all fracking activity, said Dusty Horwitt, senior counsel with the Environmental Working Group. Here's what the green groups are asking from EPA:

First, we urge the EPA to investigate whether the SDWA was violated when companies used diesel fuel for hydraulic fracturing.

Second, while we would also like the EPA to investigate what chemical constituents are being used in hydraulic fracturing fluids, at a minimum we urge the EPA to ask any companies involved in hydraulic fracturing to certify whether or not they are using diesel in fracturing operations. We believe the EPA has the authority to request such a certification under 40 C.F.R.144.17.

Third, the EPA should take action to ensure that there is no unauthorized use of diesel in hydraulic fracturing. It is critical that EPA enforce the Safe Drinking Water Act so that drinking water supplies are protected.

The groups also want the precise locations disclosed. “We’d like to know exactly where so communities can protect themselves and take precautions,” said Horwitt.

To date, there is no evidence that the company used diesel in Texas wells.

I’ve asked the White campaign for comment and will post their response when I get it.

Bill White Doesn’t Know What Guns He Owns

July 30, 2010

Tyler television station KETK is reporting that liberal trial lawyer Bill White doesn’t know what guns he owns.

On Thursday, the station reported, “Governor Perry’s office calls out Bill White, saying he doesn’t know what guns he owns. On Tuesday, Bill White was given a shotgun as a gift but he didn’t accept, telling a Dallas radio station he already owns a shotgun and a handgun. However, Bill White’s Shoot Straight Texas website says, ‘Bill White owns a pistol for protection and a hunting rifle.’ Now we contacted Bill White’s office to comment on the issue. They have not called us back.” (Video available online at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kOq1ehgK0NA)

Perhaps the reason the station got no response from Bill White is he was busy rewriting his website, which since its launch on July 12 has said, “Bill White owns a pistol for protection and a hunting rifle.” [1]

The website now reads, “Bill White owns a pistol for protection and a 12-gauge shotgun.” [2]

“Liberal trial lawyer Bill White should rename his website LieToTexas.com, because he sure isn’t shooting straight when he claims to own a hunting rifle then later claims to own a shotgun,” said Texans for Rick Perry spokesman Mark Miner. “Bill White may not know the difference between a rifle and a shotgun, but real Texans do.”

During an interview with KRLD radio on Tuesday, Bill White said, “I already have a shotgun and a hand gun.” [3]

Earlier Tuesday, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported, “White said he doesn't keep gifts of significant value that are given to him during his political campaign.” [4]

This is not true, as Bill White reported accepting numerous gifts of significant value while mayor of Houston, which are listed in annual personal financial disclosures available on his campaign website. Among the gifts Bill White has accepted include: free flights on private planes (2), free lodging for ski trip in Colorado (twice), free lodging at a ranch, free hotel room, free trip to Susman Godfrey anniversary weekend, free football game tickets, free baseball game tickets, free basketball game tickets, and framed photo of Bill White and his wife. [5]

Bill White has remained a candidate since his election for mayor in 2003. He stood for re-election in 2005 and 2007, in 2008 he declared his candidacy for U.S. Senate, and in 2009 he declared his candidacy for Texas Governor.

Bill White Hiring Actors For Attack Ads He Is Writing Because No One Else Will Appear In Them

July 29, 2010

Liberal trial lawyer Bill White’s campaign is so desperate to attack Gov. Perry that it has resorted to offering to pay actors to appear in attack ads he is writing to be filmed next month.

Advertisements have appeared online offering to pay actors to appear in a “low budget political ad series for Bill White” that is “shooting in August.” [1, 2]

Last month, Bill White bragged, “I write my own speeches and the words you hear in my commercials are my own.” [3]

“Liberal Bill White’s entirely negative campaign sinks lower every day,” said Texans for Rick Perry spokesman Mark Miner. “Had Bill White not spent the last several months blatantly lying to the people of Texas about his scandalous past, he might not have to pay actors to appear in attack ads he is writing. Perhaps Bill White will be paying these actors from the money President Obama is raising for him next month.”

An invitation to a fundraiser President Obama is holding in Austin on Aug. 9 says, “Some of the proceeds will remain in Texas to help elect Democrats in Texas, including Bill White as our next governor." [4]

Bill White Still Lying About Anti-Gun Beliefs

July 26, 2010

Liberal trial lawyer Bill White continues to lie about his multi-year membership in the anti-gun group Mayors Against Illegal Guns.

“If liberal Bill White truly supported gun rights, he never would have joined an anti-gun group created to oppose them,” said Texans for Rick Perry spokesman Mark Miner. “Now that Bill White is being forced to explain his anti-gun past, he continues to lie as he has since last year when a fellow Democrat called on him to quit the group and Bill White claimed that he already had, even though he hadn’t.”

In a new report from the Austin American Statesman titled, “Group listed White among foes of gun law, but campaign says he favors it,” Bill White’s campaign claims he supports the Tiahrt Amendments, which protect the privacy of gun owners. [1, full article below]

This statement ignores the fact that when Mayors Against Illegal Guns was created on April 25, 2006, included in its statement of principles was opposition to the Tiahrt Amendments, and that the group’s website says, "Since it was formed in 2006, Mayors Against Illegal Guns has been fighting to reform the Tiahrt Amendments." [2, 3]

Bill White joined the group on June 1, 2006, and resigned July 28, 2009, one day after fellow Democrat John Sharp called on Bill White to resign from the group. Even though these dates have been confirmed to the media by the group’s spokesman, Bill White continues to falsely claim he had already resigned by the time John Sharp criticized his membership. [4, 5]

Bill White also does not know the difference between the Tiahrt Amendments, which protects gun owner privacy rights, and the Thune Amendment, which establishes reciprocity between states regarding carrying concealed firearms. Earlier this year, Bill White claimed he quit the group over its opposition to the Tiahrt Amendments, but then described the purpose of the Thune Amendment instead. Bill White’s name has appeared in national newspaper ads opposing both. [1, 6]

VIDEO: “Bill White’s Campaign About Nothing”

July 14, 2010

With liberal trial lawyer Bill White failing to offer one new policy idea during his two years of statewide campaigning, Texans for Rick Perry has released a new video, “Bill White’s Campaign About Nothing.” The video is available online at www.liberalbill.com.

Today is also Day 128 of Bill White refusing to release his taxes from his years in public service. Bill White refuses to release his taxes from 1993-1998, years he held public service positions that required him by law to complete annual personal financial disclosures. While Bill White was Deputy Secretary of Energy (1993-95) and Chairman of the Texas Democratic Party (1995-98), he was required by law to complete annual personal financial disclosures that he has also failed to make public.

Too Many Cooks In The Kitchen

July 13, 2010

In a pathetic attempt to draw attention to his abysmal campaign, Bill White held a sparsely attended online “town hall” on Monday where the liberal trial lawyer bored dozens of viewers and answered a planted question from a Democratic consultant.

The Texas Tribune said of the event: A “Mr. Cook”, a.k.a. Democratic consultant Harold Cook, tweeted a question asking if White would live in a rental mansion like Perry. (SOURCE: “Kirk Watson Holds Online Town Hall With Bill White,” Texas Tribune, 7/12/10, http://www.texastribune.org/texas-politics/2010-texas-governors-race/kir...)

“Realizing his limited audience was either falling asleep or not interested in the lack of substance, Bill White called on a known Democrat consultant to try to save the day during a town hall last night,” said Texans for Rick Perry spokesman Mark Miner. “Liberal Bill most likely learned this fake question routine from his good buddy, President Obama, who is known for answering planted questions during his press conferences. Bill White continues his campaign about nothing and once again failed to offer any ideas of substance during last night’s town hall.”

In 2009, the Washington Post reported on President Obama answering planted questions at a White House press conference. (SOURCE: “Stay Tuned for More of 'The Obama Show,’” Washington Post, 6/24/09, http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/06/23/AR200906...)

Statement from Texans for Rick Perry Spokesman Mark Miner on Bill White Town Hall

July 12, 2010

"During tonight’s online town hall, which had a breathtaking 11 participants according to UStream, Bill White once again failed to unveil one new policy initiative. Texans having a difficult time sleeping this evening may want to replay Bill White’s comments.

"The people of Texas want a leader like Gov. Perry, who has positioned Texas to have one of the strongest economies in the country, not someone like Bill White who profiteered during Hurricane Rita when he was mayor of Houston, has refused to release his tax returns, and served on the board of a company under investigation by Congress for polluting groundwater.

"When will Bill White learn that tearing down Texas is not a solution for the future?"

Bill White’s “Flawed” Campaign Bankrupt Of Ideas

July 9, 2010

As liberal trial lawyer Bill White continues to run a negative campaign bankrupt of ideas, the Texas Observer recently published an article that begins: “Rick Perry has picked up on an important and hard-to-argue flaw in his opponent’s campaign. For once, I’ll let Gov. Perry say it for me: ‘Bill White's been running for governor now for close to a year, and he has yet to lay out one positive, substantive policy issue for this state.’” (SOURCE: “Does Bill White Have A Big Idea?” Texas Observer, 7/7/10, http://www.texasobserver.org/purpletexas/he-cant-beat-gov-perry-without-one)

“Liberal Bill White continues to run a negative campaign of no substance based on personal attacks,” said Texans for Rick Perry spokesman Mark Miner. “Texans will continue to support Governor Perry’s proven leadership, Texas values, and priorities of limited government, fiscal responsibility, and job creation that have made our state the envy of the nation.”

Bill White has refused to release his income tax returns for his years in public service for 124 days and counting.

Missing Taxes Day 121: Bill White Talks About Protecting the Environment, Ignores Ties To Company Under Investigation For Pollution

July 7, 2010

During an appearance in Kerrville on Monday night, Bill White pretended to be a defender of the environment, yet neglected to confess that BJ Services, a company that paid him $2.6 million while he served as mayor of Houston, is under investigation by Congress for potentially polluting groundwater in North Texas (SOURCE: “White linked to company facing pollution probe,” Houston Chronicle, 3/17/10).

“While Bill White talks about the importance of protecting the environment, he conveniently fails to mention how he profited from a company being investigated by Congress for possibly polluting North Texas groundwater,” said Texans for Rick Perry spokesman Mark Miner. “As Bill White talks out of both sides of his mouth in the effort to hide his abysmal record and shady business dealings, he continues his no-substance campaign which has failed to produce any new policy initiatives and continues to tear down Texas values.”

Not only is Bill White’s hypocrisy on environmental issues made evident by his relationship with BJ Services, but the fact that he earned more than $2.6 million from the company while he also served as mayor of Houston raises serious questions about how else he could have profited from his years in public service. Bill White needs to come clean with the people of Texas and release his tax returns for all his years in public service.
